The rich dark purple background really makes the colorful bold lines pop. The text, like the line-work, is used sparingly. This postcard designed by <a href="https://www.behance.net/gallery/17281841/Makeup-Call-Inc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">David Van Landingham</a> does a great job at highlighting the services offered by MCI (Makeup Call Inc.), while also providing an example of their makeup work. The dark color scheme of the front contrasts nicely with the lighter backside. In addition, the grungier walls and shadows of the front contrast with the serene formality of the back, subtly reinforcing the idea that this company does more than weddings.</div>

This postcard shows a beautiful property and a pleasant looking real estate agent. The contact information is clearly visible and well organized, but what really set the card apart for us was the artistic touch of the green apples. </div>

It's basic design textbook stuff, but it's stuff people often forget.</div>

Many real estate agents like to show themselves on their promotional material, and it makes sense. An agent's picture goes far to help establish trust and rapport. What's interesting about this first card is that it's targeting someone who's close to the veteran, rather than the veteran. It recognizes how important the spousal support system is for veterans. This idea is reinforced by the very photogenic and very happy couple.<br />

Also, please note the nice big Call To Action "Every Veteran Should Enroll." If you want to make your postcard design effective, make sure you have a Call To Action that stands out.<br />

This second postcard also focuses on family, although in this case it's appealing more to veterans directly. They want to be there for their children. The Air Force shirt the dad's wearing is a nice subtle touch. It feels like a natural moment instead of in-your-face military advertising. It's also nice to see he's playing catch with his daughter. The military has taken many steps to ensure gender equality lately, and I can't help but wonder if they intentionally chose to show a girl doing an activity many people would have associated with boys in the past. </div>

The woman's sitting on a brick wall, something we subconsciously associate with strength and sturdiness. She's smiling, so we know she's happy with the choice she made. And speaking of <i>the choice</i>, pay attention to the position of the white box and remember this is about mammography.</span></div>

It's unique from the others because it has a removable magnet that can be placed on fridges and filing cabinets. However, from a design standpoint, it's very similar to Timber Dental. So rather than focusing on the smiling family again, I'd like to point something out that's present in this card as well as quite a few of the others: <i>Nature</i>. </div>

If we're being honest, most people don't enjoy the dentist or doctor's office. It's an uncomfortable environment and often times the sacrifices that have to be made for the sake of sterility bring about a certain... ambiance. So it only makes sense to show the great outdoors. It's serene and peaceful. Those are pretty good qualities to associate with dentistry.</div>

For today's design spotlight, I wanted to take a look a this great minimalist card created by Creative Director <a href="http://www.vernabhargava.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Verna Bhargava</a> and her team. Their objective was to design something that encouraged people of various disciplines and backgrounds, everyone from scientists to artists, to attend a symposium about the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. I'd say they succeeded. </div>

The postcard brilliantly merges science with design. The winding curves covering the main side of the postcard are a clever nod to the Richter scale. </div>

And by using a textured brush instead of uniform solid lines to create the waves, the viewers mind is able to treat the shapes more abstractly. It's like looking at a cloud - everyone's going to interpret it a little differently. When I look at them, my mind conjures up images of shaky mountains and collapsing roads.</div>

You have a postcard that can change your mind.<br />
<br />
And when I came across a series of postcards from Indonesian designer OJANTO WORK, that's exactly what happened to me.<br />
<br />
The postcards are maps of various cities throughout Indonesia. Ojan states that each card is designed with colors and perspective that reflect the uniqueness of the city it represents.<br />
<br />
Perhaps I'm drawn to the maps (guess I'm a closet map lover). And I'm definitely attracted to the bright colors and bold lines. I like the innocence of the graphics and the professional crispness of the execution. I see the influence of textile design, and palettes of colorful inks being pulled through a screen.<br />
<br />
Ojan wonders if the designs might help convince someone to come visit a vast and varied country. <br />
<br />
I think it has.<br />

It's easy to see why this great postcard designed by<a href="http://graphicdesignnebraska.com/" target="_blank"> April of Drop Designworks </a>caught our eye. It's cute, clever, and most importantly, it's clear what the message is.<br />
<br />
On the front of the card, I love how April effectively conveys two messages by simply inverting the colors. It causes us to read the headline in two different ways, without being confusing.<br />
<br />
This creative approach saves space and prevents the postcard from appearing cluttered.<br />
<br />
The use of a textile texture is also a subtle but brilliant touch. It's interesting visually, and it's a clever nod to the fact that alpaca are commonly used for their fiber.<br />
<br />
It's great when a design is interesting to look at, but it's even better when that interesting design is intrinsically tied to the subject matter.<br />
<br />
The card also excels from a visual hierarchy standpoint. The information is conveyed efficiently thanks to prominent headlines and sparingly used copy.<br />
<br />
The sponsoring organization is clearly presented, and there's just enough whimsical imagery to keep the card playful without losing a sense of professionalism.<br />
<br />
<br />
Overall this card definitely gets our seal of approval. Great job, April!<br />

The first postcard is from <a href="https://www.behance.net/saradelamora" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sara de la Mora</a>, a Spanish designer based in London. The card was prepared as part of a Yelp competition “Yelp’s Key To London”.<br />

I love how the bookplate design draws you in. You're transported to the comfort of your easy chair, an Agatha Christie paperback, and bam -- you realize you're on a journey in a Yelp ad. Very slick, indeed.<br />

We're very impressed with the work of <a href="https://www.behance.net/yanvianiwongso" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Yanviani Wongso</a>, a design student from Singapore. The postcard is effective -- promoting a gallery show -- as well as fresh and creative. It's nice to see a designer who is playful with type, without creating a distraction, and without over powering the message.<br />

His postcard design for a farmer's market is interesting because it features black and white photography. Your eye is drawn to the red, and to the copy it contains. It shows how much can be accomplished with just a color or two.<br />

While at School of Art at Texas Tech University, New York's <a href="https://www.behance.net/elliotsalazar" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Elliot Salazar</a> created a postcard design to help promote the school's First Friday event. <br />

The postcard's graphics are somewhat complex and this has a positive effect. First, you are drawn to them. Then you spend a moment examining them. Before you know it, you've invested yourself in the design and want to learn more about the postcard's message. <br />
<br />
It's quite an accomplishment to pull someone from their daily hub-bub, and into your message -- even if its only for fifteen seconds.<br />

It takes courage to whittle down a complex description into an effective brand message.<br />

Too many designs are based on a "kitchen sink" strategy, where the layout includes multiple messages and the corresponding details for each.<br />

These unfortunate, busy designs are often a result of "design by committee." Or they're designs with purely the results in mind -- forgetting that there is a reader involved. <br />

A great design starts with the reader, introduces an idea and leads to results.<br />
<br />
These designs often appear simple. But it's in the designer's whittling that much of the work is done.<br />
<br />

These two postcards, used as a self-promotion, are tasked with grabbing attention (with color and boldness), asking a question ("does your brand need a facelift?") and offering a solution ("Dlouhy").<br />

The first postcard sets the stage. The follow-up postcard reinforces the message.<br />

postcards designed for Urgent Care marketing -- promoting the clinics to their
nearby communities.</span></div>

<span lang="EN">Urgent Care postcards have
to accomplish many things: explain what 'Urgent Care' means, promote the clinic, provide
contact and address details, and provide a call to action. This can be a lot of work for a little

<span lang="EN">The best strategy is
probably to break out the campaign into a series of cards with simple messages.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Good design helps engage the reader. It should not only get the attention of their mind, but it should help involve them emotionally.<br />
<br />
A good design has the power to do great things. It can draw attention to important issues, promote a point of view, recruit people to promote change, and yes, can help get an economy rolling again.<br />
<br />
That's what went through my mind when I came across designer <a href="http://www.behance.net/jacquelinerivera" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jacqueline Rivera</a>'s recent postcard design to promote green jobs for the California Construction Academy.<br />
<br />
It also made me think that the path to a vibrant economy starts with fresh thinking and thousands of micro projects like this. I 'd like to thank Jacqueline for letting me see that.<br />

The folks at <a href="http://joshuaonesix.com/the-work/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Joshua One Six</a> are a collaborative of designers who do advocacy using their communication and branding expertise. Call them designers -- or storytellers. Either way, they're great at using quality photography, type and other design tools to help convey their message, on everything from websites to postcards.<br />

Stacey's postcard design, to promote a 5K fund raiser at a local church, was spot on.<br />
<br />
She uses 1) a compelling image and 2) simple copy to draw the eye and tell the story.<br />
<br />
Postcards are like miniature billboards. And designers who understand that will consistently develop winners.<br />

Social media and web design is so different from old media like billboards and postcards, right?<br />

This week, I came upon the website for <a href="http://www.thoughtworks.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ThoughtWorks</a>, an 'atypical' software firm that shows how the same design principles that work for postcards, can work for a web page.<br />
<br />
Take a look at the site's eight banners that scroll across the <a href="http://www.thoughtworks.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">homepage</a>. <br />
<br />
Each banner is tasked with calling attention to an issue, and piquing your interest to find out more. Each banner is, essentially, a postcard.<br />
<br />
I was so impressed with the quality, and the diversity of the concepts, I added some drop shadow and present them to you here, as postcards. (They may not be postcards,<i> per se</i>; but they certainly are their progeny.)<br />

For a postcard designer, they certainly are inspirational.<br />

Postcards make a lot of sense for these organizations since they're affordable, they reach a targeted audience and yes, they can convey a concise message through a well-crafted design.<br />

Well, if you're like most. You fill it with lots of pictures of smiling students and colorful campuses.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, you could stand out from the pack and create a design that is serious and professional.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://timscheman.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Designer Tim Scheman</a> uses a monochrome blue palette, lots of bullet points and thoughtful graphics for recruiting students to the Met Center at St Louis Community College.<br />
<br />
I think the postcard design works because those who are interested in job training programs are likely to be serious themselves -- not looking for glitz and frills. The no-nonsense design conveys a "we're here to learn" message.<br />

It only makes sense that color has an impact on a design. <br />
<br />
Someone looking at the psychological impact of color in marketing just needs to look at the roots: nature has used color to attract pollinators and distract attackers for, well, a very long time.<br />
<br />
Sure, there is a lot that effects <i>what</i> we think when we look at a postcard design, but of all the cues we consider, color can be one of the strongest.<br />
<br />
As noted in <a href="http://blog.kissmetrics.com/color-psychology/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">KISSmetrics</a>, retailers in North America (yes, location matters) use colors to convey messages to their customers:<br />
<ul>
<li>red conveys 'energy'</li>
<li>blue conveys 'security'</li>
<li>orange conveys 'aggressive'</li>
<li>pink conveys 'romantic and feminine'</li>
<li>green conveys 'wealth' (or 'earth friendly'?)</li>
<li>black conveys 'powerful and sleek'</li>
</ul>
There's even an inter-industry association -- the <a href="http://www.colormarketing.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Color Marketing Group</a> -- that works on forecasting international color trends. Their slogan is says it all: "Color Sells... and the 'Right' Colors Sell Better! "<br />
<br />
Since a color choice could impact response, there's a lot riding on selecting the appropriate color for your postcard design. <br />
<br />
Up and coming designer <a href="http://alexmasica.wordpress.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alex Masica</a> explores the 'color in advertising' issue with a set of dramatic 'sunburst' postcards designed to promote his full-service design house.<br />
<br />
His postcards, in green, red, purple and blue, each state the same message. <br />

Nearly every time I hear there are rules for designing postcards, I discover that these rules can be broken. <br />
<br />
That said, there are a few rules that you probably don't want to mess with. Here is #1:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The designer needs to make a connection with the audience he/she intends to reach. </blockquote>
<br />
This basically boils down to: "you need to understand who you're speaking to, before you speak."<br />
<br />
Take a look at a series of postcard designs created for <a href="http://www.polerstuff.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Poler</a>. Poler makes outdoor gear for outdoor people -- not the outdoor type who wants to conquer the world, but for those who like enjoying the adventure.<br />
<br />
So photographer <a href="http://www.benjiwagner.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Benji Wagner</a> and artist <a href="http://makingstuffanddoingthings.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Nicole Lavelle</a> created a promotional postcard series which reflects that.<br />
<br />
The cards were printed by <a href="http://www.printpinball.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Print Pinball</a> on a thick, uncoated duplex paper that's white on one side and chipboard on the other. <br />
<br />
There's no high gloss printing and no high impact sales pitch. Just a reminder of what any Poler customer can appreciate: that it's good to be outdoors.<br />
